Updated on 01.12.25:
Not only are DDR4 modules currently becoming significantly more expensive — DDR5 RAM is also severely affected by the current market tension:
The shortage of DRAM wafers (silicon discs on which memory chips are manufactured), the redistribution of production capacities in favour of HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) and server memory, and massive demand from AI and cloud data centres are causing DDR5 prices to rise sharply worldwide. The wafer area required for HBM is significantly larger than for classic DDR5 products. HBM requires around 2–3 times more silicon area per bit than standard DRAM. This means that even a small number of AI or server GPU units with HBM memory take up production capacity that could otherwise be available for thousands of desktop RAM modules. This competition for capacity is contributing to DDR5 memory currently becoming more expensive and scarcer.
Original article:
The DDR4 memory market is currently experiencing one of the most unusual phases in recent years. The major semiconductor manufacturers — Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix — announced as early as spring that they will gradually phase out DDR4 DRAM production by the end of 2025. This decision, combined with geopolitical conflicts and trade tensions including reciprocal tariffs, has significantly affected supply conditions.
The consequences are becoming clear: Spot prices for DDR4 modules have recently risen sharply, while demand for upgrades remains consistently high. At the same time, there are initial indications that manufacturers may extend production at least partially into 2026 due to global demand. The current price level makes continued production economically attractive for them.
However, the uncertainty in the market is leading to distortions. Some module types are deliberately kept scarce, while others are temporarily offered at inflated prices. Those not working with memory modules on a daily basis can hardly follow these dynamics.
Of course, everyone hopes that prices will eventually ease. Yet, both from today’s perspective and from business experience, one principle holds true:
👉 Those who speculate on falling prices amid tight supply often end up paying more — or no longer getting the required module at all. Acting early remains the smarter strategy.
For CompuRAM customers, we want to send a clear and reassuring message:
Thanks to our international supplier network, availability remains strong. We can deliver any required DDR4 upgrade — as DIMM or SO-DIMM — directly from stock.
At the same time, we must take into account the significantly higher repurchase costs, which means our price levels have also adjusted accordingly. We appreciate your understanding.
What’s next? Our outlook for the coming months
- We expect noticeable price fluctuations to continue at least until mid-2026.
- Companies that plan to continue using DDR4-based systems long-term should schedule upgrades or spare part stockpiles early.
- If you’re unsure which exact module fits your system: with RAMinator and RAMadvisor, we always provide reliable recommendations.
Why CompuRAM upgrades remain a worthwhile choice
Our customers rely on stable quality, strict testing processes, and our 10-year warranty. Especially in turbulent market phases, a reliable and verified solution is more important than ever. We remain committed to our mission of providing the right upgrade for every system — quickly, safely, and at a fair price.
