They all have similiar names. They also do the same. Speaking of RAM Cleaning tools: these software programs shut down unnecessary programs and empty your RAM space. This way, they create space for programs, which eventually need more RAM to run more efficiently. In theory this sounds very practical, however, various difficulties can be found when taking a closer look…

Empty RAM = good RAM?

Modern operational systems know how to administer their RAM. RAM cleaning tools in fact promise a boost for your system, but the contrary is the case. Let’s take a look at the following example: you have 16GB RAM available on your system. In Windows’ task manager you can easily find out how much RAM is currently in use and how much is still empty.  For example, there could be noted that 12GB RAM are being used at the moment and „only“ 4GB RAM are available. This is the pivotal point when trying to answer the question „Do I need a RAM cleaning tool?“. In this case, the RAM cleaning tool would only suggest shutting down some processes – not knowing, that these processes perhaps aren’t absolutely necessary, but when they are running, the PC speed is increased rather than reduced.

Basically, the explanation is very easy: What’s the use of empty RAM? None! RAM exists to be used. Modern operational systems like Windows 7 use the available RAM to make applications faster for the user. When your RAM is apparently being used a lot at the moment, this only means, that enough RAM is in usage to buffer data for quick access. Caching is the crucial key word.

The agenda of RAM Cleaning tools

A RAM cleaning tool suggests to end certain processes, respectively to cache them somewhere else, which means on slower storage. At first glance, the tool frees some RAM space, without shutting down the used and running applications completely. The particular RAM storage then is empty and isn’t doing anything anymore. It waits for its next service. The applications do without the speed optimizing, just closed processes. For the user that seems positive in the first moment. You could meand finally some more RAM for additional programs. But this chain of thought is unnecessary with modern operational systems, because they administer the space on their own and intelligently. You can by all means use your RAM completely. If you want to start another program, your system knows to help itself. It frees for example cached data to get space for the new application.

When RAM is empty, then it is one thing for sure: usseless. In the task manager of Windows you find the crucial information. Call the manager with the shortcut [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete] and click on the tab „performance“. Here four categories with the respective MB-values are shown to you below “Physical storage“. Essential is the third point “Available“, This is the RAM that is being used for caching, but at all time, if necessary, can be freed for other work.

What to do on older operational systems?

If you still work with Windows vista on your workstation, then this is a different case. A full RAM means you actually have got a problem. However, a RAM cleaning tool is still no good choice in this case. The tool only postpones the problem for a moment. Instead of writing necessary data onto the RAM, it writes into the Windows page file and requests the release of cache. This results in a continuously decreasing performance of your computer. A quick help can be shutting down some autostart programs. But in the long run you will only be able to solve the problem with more built-in RAM. We are happy to give advise and recommend the ideal RAM upgrade for your individual system. Which kind of perfomance improvement can be expected? We have measured the performance improvement for you.

Conclusion:

Hands off RAM cleaning tools! You don’t need these additional programs. On the contrary: The so-called “optimizer” programs bother your operational system and make it more inefficient by emptying correctly used RAM and caching data on slower drives. If you search for a perfomance improvement, then a RAM upgrade is surely the best choice.

I have a problem of low speed laptop. I am using a RAM cleaner software to speed up my system but I wasn’t expreincing much of a diffrence. It was good on first day but after that my laptop just starting performing worse and I was wondering how. Well now I know the problem and unistalling the software is surely showing good signs.
